During XVIII
th century, a new era began for diamond
: discovery, by chance, of Bresiliandiamonds
deposits.
In
1725, In mina gérais province, a Portuguese settler could
have recognized diamonds in crystal stones that goldminers used
as chips to play cards. Stones were sent to Amsterdam to be expertise.
And in 1730, Diamonds fields were declared Crown property. One century later, this colony will become "Diamantina". This discovery was so important that from 1730 to 1735, it reduced per 4, price of diamond. At the time, it was told that production would be unlimited and easy working. Some people refused to buy diamonds because they thought that would become common as usual stones.
But, in spite of supply abundance, cut diamond price did not change
: 200 FF. gold/karat in 1860 and 530 FF. GOLD IN 1867. Middle class,
quite wealthy, permitted to democratize luxury, and popularize diamonds
jewels. Then, it absorbed the whole surplus of production.
So the spring dries up and the Brazilian production kept reducing.
