The
« Brilliant cut » known as « modern »
began around 1910 from « Ancient Cut » known as «
Full cut” from previous century. We can find 24 facets on the culet,
a girdle perfectly round, 32 facets on above table. Experience,
and calculations have allowed many variants in which brilliant cut
“Feinschlift” known as Beautiful cut. These proportions give diamond
its maximum flash.
The examination of a stone can last
several days depending on its cut, its form or its clarity. The
whole art consists in getting a diamond with the best qualities,
and optimum weight, from an uncut stone whatever its form and quality
are. In accordance with its clarity, a single or several stones
can be extracted from one crystal. (Knowing one inclusion makes
the stone less valuable).
The work of “cut” is made of 4 phases : The cliving It is the fact to slipt the diamond along what is known as “plan de clivage”. Diamond is blocked in hard wax and set following the choosen “plan de clivage”. Then a thin steel blade is inserted in a thin incision made on crystal plans of the diamond. Then you hit the stone sharply with a hammer. “Le clivage” requires a lot of experience, because you can break the stone in pieces if you give a bad biaised blow.
